Science. Technology. Engineering. Art. Math.

On Friday mornings we offer a special STEAM program. Children who participate in this program have the opportunity to engage more deeply but still in a fun, developmentally appropriate way in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and art.

Each month, we focus on an area of art and an area of science. For example, in October, we explored color and matter. Our weekly planned activities explore each of those areas in a fun, thoughtful and engaging way. One week we created a color wheel and made oobleck, a matter which is both liquid and solid. The next week we mixed colors and created pumpkin paintings, and we made play dough (demonstrating liquid to solid). The following week we explored tints and shades in black and white and made bubbles.

Other areas that we have explored include cause and effect — with a marble run, a spaghetti catapult and dominos; coding — where we studied morse code and created a game with arrows and pathways, and foundations and structure — where we built a suspension bridge.

Enrollment in the STEAM program requires a separate registration. Priority registration is given to children enrolled in preschool at SMP.
