Science. Technology. Engineering. Art. Math.

On Friday mornings throughout the school year, we offer a STEAM program. Children who participate in this class engage more deeply in a fun, developmentally appropriate way in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

Each month, we focus on an area of art and an area of STEM. For example, in October, we explored color and matter. One week we created a color wheel and made Oobleck, a matter which is both liquid and solid. The next week we mixed colors – discovering how to create new colors - creating pumpkin paintings with the new colors, and we made play dough - demonstrating liquid to solid. The following week we explored tints and shades in black and white and made our own bubbles for blowing.

STEM topics that we have explored include cause and effect — with a marble run, a spaghetti catapult, and dominos; coding — where we studied morse code and created a game with arrows and pathways, and foundations and structure — where we built a suspension bridge.

Art topics we have explored include 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art – creating a piece on paper and then creating the same subject as a sculpture; Photography – exploring composition and editing.

Enrollment in the STEAM program requires a separate registration. Priority registration is given to children enrolled in preschool at SMP.
